Blog commenting is an effective traffic generation strategy. When you leave a comment on popular blogs related to your niche, it helps you get quality traffic and backlinks to your website. It also helps you build a relationship with the owner and readers of that blog.
However, when you’re leaving a comment at a high-trafficked blog with dozens of comments, getting attention can be difficult.
If you want to use blog commenting as part of your traffic generation and linkbuilding plan, here are some best practice tips to help you get the most out of blog commenting.
1. Get a gravatar
A Gravatar is an icon or image of a user that is usually associated with his/her email address. When you make a comment on a blog with your gravatar enabled, you will see that image behind your name.
There are 3 main reasons you want to use a Gravatar when blog commenting.
- Using a gravatar in blog commenting makes you look more professional.
- It helps to suggest that you are a serious commenter.
- It helps to give you a brand when people will recognize you with your gravatar.

2. Use your real name
Whenever possible, you should use your real name when commenting on a blog. Using your real name helps build trust with the blog owner and the blog’s community.
If you want to use your keywords or business name, make sure that blog has KeywordLuv which means adding keywords (next to your real name) is allowed by the blog owner.
3. Make a meaningful comment
This is the most important blog commenting strategy to make your comment stand out. When you’re leaving comments that add value to the blogs, it gets the attention of both the bloggers and readers.
Always make sure your comment adds a few more points, gives an insight, provides an alternative solution about the problem as mentioned in the post.
When a post gets too many comments already, replying to the first commenter can be just as effective as being the first commenter to the post. It will make your comment visible and worth reading, provided of course that you’re making a very good comment.
Pining is a method to let the server, the pinging services, and ultimately the search engines know that a blog has been updated. If you’re familiar with pinging your blog posts with services like Pingomatic.com, then maybe you should also ping your blog comments.
Pinging your comments will help the search engines crawl your comments faster and therefore recognize your link to your site sooner.
So those are the basic blog commenting tips. Remember, like other traffic generation and link building strategies such as guest posting, you want to stick with your chosen strategy and use it on a regular and consistent basis. It will get you the results you want to see.
I hope all commenters get to read this post of yours Janus. I have a comment policy on my blog which I don’t think many had noticed or even if they do, they probably don’t even read it. Comments must be of value added to the post topic or at least to continue a conversation/discussion. I hate comments like “Thanks for the great posts”, “Hey you got a great site, I’ve subscribed” and etc which don’t have any value at all. I don’t like commenters to use only keywords as their names either, I do have KeywordLuv installed, but if still they don’t use a real name then that’s too bad for them, I don’t want to address a person with “Hi Cheap Laptops” or “Thanks for commenting Car Insurance Agent”, these comments will be deleted even if they’re meaningful comments. Blog commenting is one of the ways to drive traffic if used properly but most importantly in my opinion is to build a good relationship with the site owner and its readers.

Using a real name is also to show respect to the blog owner. When the blog has KeywordLuv installed, I don’t see why people still don’t enter their real names together with their targeted keywords. After all, blog commenting is not just about getting traffic and backlinks, it’s more about building genuine relationship in the long run.
